Sinusitis
Sinusitis is a common condition that causes swelling and inflammation of the sinuses, often after a cold or viral infection. It can leave you feeling congested, sore, and completely run down — especially if it lingers. Through our Pharmacy First sinusitis service, you can speak to a qualified pharmacist by phone or video call and get expert advice without needing to see a GP. If suitable, we may recommend over-the-counter treatments or refer you for further care.
What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis happens when the lining of your sinuses becomes inflamed, usually because of a cold or viral illness. It’s a common cause of facial pressure, blocked nose, and a feeling of fullness in your head — and it can affect both adults and teenagers.
There are two main types:
- Acute sinusitis – short-term inflammation that usually clears within a few weeks
- Chronic sinusitis – ongoing symptoms lasting 12 weeks or longer
While most cases improve with self-care, some may require treatment — especially if symptoms persist or worsen.

Symptoms of Sinusitis
The symptoms of sinusitis can vary, but common signs include:
- A blocked or runny nose
- Pain or pressure around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead
- Thick, yellow or green nasal discharge
- Reduced or lost sense of smell
- Headache, earache, or jaw pain
- A feeling of pressure in the face
- Fever or fatigue in some cases
If your symptoms last more than 10 days, keep coming back, or are particularly painful, it’s a good idea to speak to a pharmacist.
How to Treat Sinusitis
Most cases of sinusitis are caused by viruses and will clear up on their own with simple self-care. Here’s how you can ease your symptoms at home:
- Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated
- Use saline nasal sprays or rinses to clear blocked passages
- Apply a warm compress to your face to ease pressure
- Take over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed
- Keep your head raised while sleeping to help your sinuses drain
Antibiotics are not usually needed, but in some cases — particularly if the infection is bacterial or persistent — a pharmacist may refer you to your GP.
If your symptoms are severe, last more than 10 days, or keep coming back, it’s best to seek advice.
